Sealed and Ready to Rebuild

I took a few of the parts home with me to sand them down and refinish them including the skid plate, oil pan, and metal shifter cover. My dad and I got underneath it last weekend to put everything back in place and this is basically how it went.

We relocated the Jeep to inside of the shop because my dad just put in a new lift. So no more gouged craniums.

We (I mean my dad) set to work putting the oil pan back in and then aligning the clutch and reinstalling the bell housing.
Not being as mechanically inclined I found all of the rust pockets and sanded and primed them. It's not a permanent fix but it will keep the metal until I can pull the tub to bead blast it.

I don't have any pics of the final portion of this project yet. But my we did get it all back together and its running, no leaks (fingers crossed). Next up is the suspension and then, I dunno what ever breaks I suppose. I am going to put my bet on the differentials though...

Dismantling a bit more...

So I was getting ready to put the freshly sealed transmission back on when my dad noticed the rear seal leaking. So...we pulled the starter, the bell housing, and the clutch (which was new, awesome!!) and finally the oil pan. I had to order the gasket set because "Frankenstein" which is officially the Jeep's name has an engine out of a '78 Wagoneer. More to come...

Starting Out

Okay so I bought a 1982 CJ5 with an AMC 360 in it about two months ago. I decided to start a project and I sure got one. I'll be blogging the process for fun and to see where I started from when I am done. These first few pics are of the first repair I had to do. Pull and re-seal the transmission (Borg-Warner, T-5) and transfer case (Dana 300) because they were leaking all over my drive way.
Here's the jeep in my driveway. I got it from a local guy who restores and repairs old Jeeps. Overall I got my money's worth. My dad built race cars when he was younger so he is going to be helping me rebuild it when I get stuck.

I took the Jeep to the shop and we will be using a trailer with a lift to do the under-body stuff.

Here is the undercarriage before any work has been done. The exhaust is only half new because the engine was originally a 4-cylinder and the guy who dropped the new engine in kept the original. Otherwise it's in pretty good shape, dirty, but not overly rusted.
 Trannies is heavy, lol.
So here is the transfer case belly up. The gears are all ingood shape but the seals had never been changed and the yokes wear worn pretty well (pictured below).
My dad talked to a friend and the options for fixing a yoke are the following. 1. Get a sleeve or yoke saver for $20. 2, Replace the yoke $50. 3. If wear is even move the seal up and use the yoke as is. We chose 3 because I am broke, but I had my reservations.
Here was a major culprit of the leak. The pan and several bolts were scrapped on something pretty serious. We had to grind and hammer the pan back to shape. A replacement is about $40.
Here is the case all sealed up. We re shimmed it too after we saw signs of gear travel on the back plate. I'll be putting it back in on the next go round and there is some suspension work to come...
